When I got married in 1995, it never occurred to me that my Marine husband and I would immediately have struggles.  I was extremely hopeful that getting married would provide me with a companion and a father for my then 11-year old son.  Well, it did that, but not without a lot of heartache, disappointment, and many challenges.

Six months after we were married, Ambassador offered to sponsor the married couples on staff to attend a local FamilyLife marriage conference.  Honestly, looking back it was the best and most timely gift we ever received!  And while the challenges of being a blended and military family were on-going in the early years of our marriage, what we learned at that conference 21 years ago has stayed with us ever since.

The two biggest takeaways was first understanding God’s blueprint for marriage and the second was realizing great marriages don’t just happenFor our marriage to grow, we both needed to be selfless, committed to the Lord, and intentional at investing time in each other.  One of the intentional steps we’ve taken is attending a Weekend to Remember® marriage getaway every few years.  Yes, the content may be the same, but the season we’re in isn’t.  We’ve yet to leave conference weekend without learning something we’d not considered before.

Coming up this week and next on “FamilyLife Today” are several more marriage stories.  We’re confident there are many listeners in your audience that need to hear an encouraging word from couples who have struggled … yet are now enjoying a stronger and better marriage.  Here’s a look at Dennis Rainey’s guests coming up on the daily broadcast:

Successfully Managing Conflict in Marriage (airs 9/7-9)

Guests: Dave & Ann Wilson and Jim & Carol Shores share the complexity of conflict, how to resolve it, and grow closer in the process.

Need You Now (airs 9/14-16)

Christian recording artist Plumb (Tiffany Lee) talk of the dark years of her marriage and how she and her husband, Jeremy, survived by trusting in the Lord.

During the next two weeks of these broadcasts, FamilyLife is offering listeners a chance tobuy one get one free registration to attend an upcoming Weekend to Remember® of their choosing.  Simply tell listeners to use the key word: BOGO or WEEKEND.  If you’d like to get the word out about this offer, contact me for the WTR tool kit.  By the way, offer ends midnight on Monday, 9/19.

For more details about the rest of FamilyLife programming in September (including a series about Equipping Grandparents, download the promo pack now and then also check out our Grandparent Day page for resources you can use to recognize these special folks in your audience.

My husband, Steve, and I have learned much over the years about each other and what true committment is.  And because of God’s grace on our marriage, we’re determined now more than ever to speak into the lives of our newly married son and his wife.  Our hearts are praying especially that they’ll see the value in attending a Weekend to Remember® this fall, just as we did many years ago.  If you have someone in your life you’d like to encourage to do the same, let me know so I can be praying for them too.
