It’s one thing for someone to give you advice on how to face a trial. It’s another when someone’s life is a living testament to not only facing trials, but overcoming them – all the while, giving Christ the glory.

Joni Eareckson Tada is that someone to many . . . in her writings, in her speaking and, for 35 years, she’s been that someone to radio listeners via her daily broadcast, “Joni and Friends.”

Joni loves opening her heart — and God’s Word – weekly as she shares rich and deep Biblical insights gleaned from living over five decades in her wheelchair. Now, 35 years and thousands of programs later, Tada’s messages are heard worldwide. With topics ranging beyond disability awareness to prayer, marriage, poetry and worship, the programs provide inspiration for those from all walks of life.

Here’s Joni’s reflection on the 35 year radio milestone as she shared on a recent “Diamonds in the Dust” radio feature:

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and I can’t believe it’s been almost 35 years since I started doing radio. I think it was back in the early 80’s when Al Sanders, the founder of Ambassador Advertising Agency, visited my home. I had been bedridden all summer with stubborn pressure sores — I mean, just look at me, paralyzed and helpless in bed: I was no radio host! But Al smiled at me; he realized the lessons I was learning needed to be passed on to others. He believed in me, and in how Jesus could encourage many others through the “broken vessel” of my body. It’s a powerful thing when someone envisions success for you, when you cannot possibly envision it for yourself. So today, think of someone like me who needs to hear, “you know, God can really use you.” And if they are reluctant? Tell them about Isaiah: when God wanted to use him, he responded with “here am I, send me.” Those are good words to get you started.
